What is the effectiveness of combining resistance training with chiropractic treatment for fibromyalgia management?

A randomized controlled trial investigated the impact of resistance training (RES) and its combination with chiropractic treatment (RES-C) on fibromyalgia (FM) symptoms and functionality in women diagnosed with FM.

In 2009, a study led by Lynn B Panton and colleagues, the study involved women with FM, with an average age of 48 years, who were randomly assigned to either the RES group (n = 10) or the RES-C group (n = 11). The RES group participated in 16 weeks of resistance training, involving 10 exercises performed twice a week. On the other hand, the RES-C group received the same resistance training regimen along with chiropractic treatment twice a week.

The participants’ strength was assessed using one repetition maximum for the chest press and leg extension, while FM impact was measured using the FM impact questionnaire, myalgic score, and the number of active tender points. Functionality was evaluated using the 10-item Continuous Scale Physical Functional Performance test. Statistical analyses compared the groups before and after the intervention.

Results showed that while both groups experienced improvements in upper and lower body strength, adherence to the training was notably higher in the RES-C group compared to the RES group. Additionally, both groups exhibited similar reductions in FM impact. However, the RES-C group demonstrated greater improvements in functionality, particularly in the domains of flexibility, balance and coordination, and endurance.

In conclusion, resistance training alone was found to enhance strength and reduce FM impact in women with FM. However, the incorporation of chiropractic treatment alongside resistance training not only improved adherence and dropout rates but also resulted in more significant enhancements in functionality, highlighting the potential benefits of a combined approach in managing FM symptoms in women.
