In a recent study conducted by Cristina Piedras-Jorge, Juan Carlos Meléndez-Moral, and José Manuel Tomás-Miguel, the effects of physical exercise on nursing home residents were investigated. The objective of the study was to assess the impact of physical activity on various dimensions, including physical, functional, and psychological aspects.
Using a quasi-experimental design, the researchers implemented an 8-week physical exercise program, consisting of two 60-minute sessions per week, among elderly residents in two nursing homes. The treatment group, consisting of 24 participants, underwent the exercise program, while the control group, comprising 27 participants, did not receive any specific intervention.
To evaluate the outcomes of the treatment, several factors were measured, including joint mobility, muscle strength, walking and stability, functional capacity, pain, cognitive status, and psychological well-being.
The results of the study were encouraging. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences between the treatment group and the control group in various areas. Participants in the treatment group demonstrated improved knee extension, elbow flexor strength, and knee extensor strength. Additionally, their stability and walking ability showed noticeable enhancement. Furthermore, the physical activity program positively influenced functional capacity, cognitive functioning, and overall well-being. Importantly, participants reported a decrease in pain perception following the treatment.
These findings lead to the important conclusion that implementing a physical activity program can have substantial benefits for nursing home residents. The study indicates that physical exercise positively impacts the physical, functional, and psychological facets of the residents’ lives. By engaging in regular physical activity, elderly individuals can potentially prevent or reduce several medical and psychological problems associated with old age. Moreover, such interventions may contribute to the avoidance of functional loss and disability.
The results of this study shed light on the significance of incorporating physical exercise programs into the care and support provided to nursing home residents. This research emphasizes the importance of promoting an active lifestyle among the elderly population, as it can lead to improved well-being and enhanced overall quality of life. These findings could have valuable implications for healthcare professionals and policymakers in developing effective strategies to address the needs of aging individuals in nursing homes.
