In a recent study published in Chinese, researchers aimed to investigate the efficacy of electroacupuncture pulse stimulation and massage therapy in treating temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD). TMD affects a significant number of individuals and can cause symptoms such as myofacial pain and external pterygoid muscle spasm.
Ninety-six patients diagnosed with TMD, including 54 with myofacial pain and 42 with external pterygoid muscle spasm, were randomly assigned to two treatment groups: electroacupuncture alone and combined massage with electroacupuncture. Each group consisted of 48 patients.
The electroacupuncture group received therapy solely through electroacupuncture pulse stimulation at specific acupoints on the affected side, including Shangguan, Xiaguan, Jiache, Tinggong, and Hegu. On the other hand, the combined therapy group underwent both electroacupuncture and massage therapy, targeting the same acupoints.
Using SPSS11.0 software for analysis, researchers compared the therapeutic outcomes between the two groups. Results indicated that the combined therapy of massage with electroacupuncture pulse stimulation demonstrated superior effectiveness compared to electroacupuncture alone, particularly among patients in the early stages of myofacial pain.
In conclusion, this study suggests that combining electroacupuncture pulse stimulation with massage therapy yields promising results in treating early-stage temporomandibular joint disorders. Further research and clinical trials may provide deeper insights into the mechanisms and long-term efficacy of this combined approach.
